Tasting Notes: The 2018 Filo di Seta captures the cooler, high-altitude character of its vineyard with a profile that focuses on vertical depth and aromatic purity. Dark cherry, crushed pomegranate, and wild plum lead the fragrance, underscored by delicate floral layers of lavender and violet. The palate is expansive yet remarkably precise, offering a dense core of black fruit balanced by a saline minerality and a refreshing vibrancy. Polished, fine-grained tannins provide a sophisticated frame for lingering notes of balsamic herb and stone dust, resulting in a finish that is both powerful and refined.
Estate History: Castello Romitorio is a historic fortress dating back to the 12th century, though its modern chapter began in 1984 when Italian artist Sandro Chia purchased the abandoned ruins. Chia dedicated himself to restoring the castle and revitalizing the surrounding vineyards in the cooler, northwestern sub-zone of Montalcino. Today, the estate is managed by his son, Filippo Chia, who has refined the winemaking process to emphasize elegance and terroir expression. The winery is known for blending a respect for ancient Tuscan traditions with a contemporary artistic sensibility, producing wines that are as much a reflection of the rugged landscape as they are of meticulous craftsmanship.
